GTA 6 Gameplay Explained: Every System Confirmed So Far

Published · GTA 6 Insider

GTA 6 gameplay: robbery, police chase and combat

GTA 6 plays like a heavier, more grounded Grand Theft Auto, built around two characters you can switch between at any time. Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look and July 2026 hands-on previews revealed a smarter wanted system that tracks what police actually know about you, weightier shooting and driving, small-scale robberies of almost any store, a criminal "profile" that reacts to how violently you play, and Red Dead Redemption 2-style life systems like gyms, eating and sleep.

This guide explains how each system works. Where a detail comes from creators who played a preview rather than from Rockstar itself, we say so, because the final game can still change.

Playing as Jason and Lucia

You can switch between Jason and Lucia in missions and free roam. Rockstar showed that when the two are close together the switch is almost seamless, and when they are far apart a quick overhead transition takes you across the map, faster than GTA V's switching. The two also act together: they can rob stores as a team, split up to shake the police, and hand each other weapons.

Their relationship is shown through how they interact rather than a visible romance meter. Previewers describe dynamic dates such as the beach, the gym, kayaking and the zoo, plus small touches like texting, holding hands and saying goodnight.

How the GTA 6 Wanted System Works

The biggest change from GTA V is that police now react to what they know about you. In GTA V, escaping mostly meant leaving a circle on the map. In GTA 6, crimes need witnesses or alarms to be reported, and police build a description of you from your outfit, your vehicle and your weapons.

  • Losing the description: changing your full outfit, swapping cars, hiding your gun or splitting Jason and Lucia up all make you harder to identify. Rockstar showed the pair swapping vehicles to slip past patrol cars.
  • Star types: previewers report that hollow stars mean a crime was reported without a description of you, while solid stars mean police have eyes on you.
  • Police no longer show on the minimap: according to previews, you spot them yourself or with Focus.
  • Getting caught on camera matters: previewers say CCTV feeds into what police know, so destroying cameras during a robbery helps.

Combat and Weapons

Gunfights use cover-based shooting with peek-and-shoot aiming. Rockstar's footage shows you can aim for an enemy's arm or leg to disable them without killing, and shoot a gun out of someone's hand. Previewers add these details:

  • Focus: a slow-motion aim mode that highlights lethal and non-lethal weak points, and even a car's engine, fuel tank or tires.
  • Heavier guns: more recoil and weight than GTA V, so long bursts of rifle fire are less accurate.
  • Limited carry: two concealed handguns plus a couple of long guns, rather than GTA V's bottomless arsenal. Extra weapons stay in a crate in your vehicles.
  • Aim assist off by default: replaced with freer aiming and light, adjustable stickiness.
  • Kill cams: optional, inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2 and Max Payne.

How you carry a weapon also changes reactions. Rockstar showed Lucia hiding a pistol behind her back to avoid attention, and previewers say police may warn you before opening fire.

Robberies and the Criminal Profile

Small-time crime is a big part of GTA 6. You can hold up convenience stores, gas stations, diners and phone shops, and work up to jewelry stores, armored vans and bank jobs. Our GTA 6 robberies guide covers each type in detail.

Rockstar also confirmed a Criminal Profile for each character. It moves through named states, from Professional to Aggressive, Violent and Psycho, depending on how much damage and violence you cause. Clean jobs with no unnecessary injuries keep you Professional. Rockstar says the profile can affect some story moments, that there is no single right way to play, and that its notifications can be turned off.

Money in GTA 6

Previewers describe three kinds of money: funds in your bank account, cash you carry (which you lose if you die until you deposit it at an ATM), and loot in duffel bags that you sell through fences. Rockstar has said money can briefly gate story progress, and that it wanted to fix GTA V's problem of having too much money and little to spend it on late in the game.

Driving, Car Theft and Vehicles

Rockstar rebuilt the driving physics, aiming for a middle ground between GTA IV's weight and GTA V's accessibility. Cars handle differently based on drivetrain, tires and suspension, and traffic is denser on narrower roads.

  • Stealing cars: Rockstar showed two methods, a quiet slim jim or a quick window smash that is more likely to attract attention. Previewers say higher-end cars need tools such as a key cloner.
  • Trackers: many cars carry trackers that can report your location when you slow down.
  • Fuel: cars need refueling, which mostly matters when you grab a random car in a getaway. Gas stations also repair vehicles.
  • Pay 'n' Spray and mod shops: both return, and mod shops have location-specific upgrades.
  • Personal vehicles: a delivery service can bring your car to you, something GTA V's story mode lacked.

Activities and Life Systems

Outside missions, GTA 6 borrows a lot from Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar's footage shows racing, parasailing, eating at fast-food restaurants and a bench-press minigame, with eating and exercise changing a character's body over time. Previewers also mention gyms with optional memberships, fishing, hunting, basketball, pool, mini golf and a shooting range, plus sleep that affects how some stats recover.

The world is also more connected to its own social media. Previewers say NPCs post about events around Leonida in real time, and you can show up to them. Phone apps cover ride-hailing, banking, messaging and photos, and there is a photo mode.

GTA 6 Graphics and Performance

Rockstar says its recent footage, including the Extended Look and the Launch Trailer, was captured in-game on a standard PS5. Previewers point to small details: sand sticking to shoes, sweat after sprinting, plants moving in water, and reflections in windows, mirrors and puddles.

  • Frame rate: reports from preview sessions describe a 30 fps target on consoles, and Rockstar has not confirmed a 60 fps mode.
  • PS5 Pro: the game is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but the improvements have not been detailed.
  • Xbox Series S: supported, with lower settings expected. See our GTA 6 Xbox Series S guide.
