GTA 6 Extended Look: Everything We Learned From Rockstar’s Big Gameplay Reveal
Rockstar Games has finally given fans the biggest official look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI. After months of waiting, trailers, rumors and a wave of unauthorized gameplay leaks, Rockstar released a roughly 26-minute GTA 6 Extended Look showing the game in action.
The presentation premiered on Netflix on August 27 before becoming available through Rockstar’s official channels. Rockstar says the footage was captured entirely from the game running on a base PlayStation 5.
So what did we actually learn? Here’s everything important from the GTA 6 Extended Look, including the story, characters, Vice City, gameplay, graphics, performance, GTA Online, release date and the questions Rockstar still hasn’t answered.

What Does the GTA 6 Extended Look?

The Extended Look is Rockstar’s longest official gameplay presentation for GTA 6 so far. Instead of showing another short cinematic trailer, Rockstar used the presentation to give viewers a much better idea of what it will actually feel like to play the game.
There is no long developer commentary explaining every feature. Instead, the footage moves between story scenes, open-world exploration, driving, shooting, character interactions and different areas of Leonida.
Most importantly, Rockstar says the footage was captured entirely in-game on a base PlayStation 5. That makes this reveal much more useful than simply looking at another pre-rendered cinematic.
Who Are the Main Characters in GTA 6?
GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The two characters form the central partnership of the game’s story. Rockstar has described their relationship as a dangerous partnership that becomes increasingly complicated after a criminal job goes wrong.
The Extended Look spends significant time showing Jason and Lucia together, giving fans a better idea of how their relationship works. The game also allows players to switch between the two characters in certain situations.
For example, the footage shows Jason and Lucia working together during dangerous situations, including an escape from a drug-related operation. This is similar to the character-switching system used in GTA 5, although GTA 6 appears to place much more emphasis on the relationship between its protagonists.
Where Does GTA 6 Take Place?
GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, a fictional US state inspired heavily by Florida. The most famous location within Leonida is Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami.
Vice City previously appeared in the 2002 classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but the new version is much larger and more detailed.
The Extended Look shows a mixture of:
- Busy city streets
- Beaches
- Apartment buildings
- Rooftops
- Nightclubs
- Bars
- Shops
- Highways
- Waterways
- Rural areas
- Tourist locations
- Criminal hideouts
The important thing is that GTA 6 isn’t simply about driving around one giant city. Leonida is designed as a broader open world with different environments and communities.
What Gameplay Did Rockstar Show?
The Extended Look finally gives us a better idea of what players will actually do in GTA 6. The footage includes plenty of classic GTA activities.
Driving
Cars remain one of the most important parts of GTA 6. The footage shows Jason and Lucia driving through city streets, highways and other areas of Leonida. Vehicles also appear to play an important role in missions and criminal activities.
Shootouts and Combat
GTA 6 is still very much a crime-focused action game. The Extended Look includes shootouts, armed robberies and dangerous encounters with other characters. Players can also see Jason and Lucia dealing with situations that quickly turn violent.
Police and Criminal Activity
The classic GTA formula is still here. Players can expect criminal missions, police attention, vehicle escapes and situations where a simple job can quickly become much more complicated.
Boats and Water
Because Leonida is heavily inspired by Florida, water is an important part of the world. The footage shows boats moving through waterways surrounded by the game’s detailed environment.
Beaches and Nightlife
The Extended Look also spends time showing off the more relaxed side of Leonida. Beaches are packed with NPCs, while nightclubs and bars contain large numbers of characters going about their business. These areas help demonstrate how much activity Rockstar is trying to put into the open world.
How Good Do the GTA 6 Graphics Look?

This is probably the biggest immediate reaction to the Extended Look. GTA 6 looks significantly more detailed than GTA 5. Characters have highly detailed faces, realistic skin, improved hair and more natural body movement.
Hair is particularly impressive because individual hairstyles appear to react naturally to movement. Lighting and reflections are also major parts of the game’s visual presentation. Digital Foundry’s technical analysis highlighted Rockstar’s use of ray-traced reflections and global illumination, along with the game’s highly detailed character rendering and environments.
The result is an open world that can look remarkably close to a cinematic while still showing actual gameplay. And remember: Rockstar says the footage was captured on the base PS5, rather than a future console.
Is GTA 6 30 FPS?
This is one of the biggest technical questions after the Extended Look. Digital Foundry analyzed the footage and concluded that the presentation strongly suggests GTA 6 is being built around a 30 FPS target on current consoles.
Why? Because GTA 6 appears to be putting a huge amount of pressure on the console hardware.
The game has:
- Large numbers of NPCs
- Heavy traffic
- Detailed environments
- Advanced lighting
- Ray-traced reflections
- Complex animations
- Physics and environmental simulation
All of that requires significant processing power. However, there’s an important distinction: Rockstar has not released a complete official performance specification saying that GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS.
So don’t treat “GTA 6 is officially confirmed at 30 FPS” as a Rockstar announcement. The safer conclusion right now is that technical analysis of the official footage strongly suggests a 30 FPS target. Whether Rockstar eventually offers another performance mode remains unknown.
What About GTA 6’s Resolution?
Technical analysis has also examined the image quality of the Extended Look. Digital Foundry estimated that the footage appears to use an internal resolution around 1440p on PS5, although this is an analysis of the footage rather than an official resolution specification from Rockstar.
The final retail game could behave differently. Rockstar could also make further optimizations between the Extended Look and launch. So resolution should currently be treated as technical analysis, not an official GTA 6 specification.
Does GTA 6 Have a Huge Map?
The Extended Look makes Leonida look enormous, but Rockstar has not published an official measurement for the complete map. There are reports from people who have seen the game suggesting that GTA 6’s map could be significantly larger than GTA 5’s.
Some claims have even suggested that the map is around twice the size of GTA 5’s playable area. But there is an important warning: Rockstar has not officially confirmed a “twice the size” measurement. Until Rockstar publishes exact map information, it’s better to describe GTA 6’s world as large and varied, rather than claiming an exact size.
Are There Lots of NPCs?
Yes, the Extended Look shows an extremely busy world. Beaches, clubs, streets and other locations contain large numbers of NPCs. There are also many vehicles moving around the world.
Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests that Rockstar has built a sophisticated NPC and world-simulation system, potentially allowing characters and vehicles to behave more dynamically.
But there’s a difference between what a trailer demonstrates and what the final game can do. The Extended Look is carefully selected footage, so we don’t yet know exactly how NPCs will behave when players create completely unpredictable situations. That’s something we’ll only properly understand after release.
Does GTA 6 Have Activities Outside Missions?
The footage suggests that GTA 6 will continue Rockstar’s tradition of filling its open worlds with things to do outside the main story. The Extended Look shows characters visiting different locations and interacting with the world instead of simply driving from one mission marker to another.
We’ve seen beaches, nightlife, vehicles, shops, boats and other environmental activities. Rockstar hasn’t yet provided a complete list of every side activity in the game, so there’s still plenty left to discover.
What Happened to GTA 6 Online?

This is one area where the Extended Look didn’t provide much new information. The presentation focuses heavily on the single-player experience, Jason, Lucia and the world of Leonida. There was no major GTA 6 Online reveal explaining the next-generation multiplayer experience.
That’s important because GTA Online became one of Rockstar’s biggest successes following GTA 5. For now, players should not assume that Rockstar has revealed the full future of GTA 6’s multiplayer component. If and when Rockstar is ready, we can expect a separate announcement.
What About the Recent Cyberleek Leaks?
The timing of the official Extended Look is particularly interesting because GTA 6 was recently hit by a wave of alleged Cyberleek leaks. The leaked clips reportedly showed parts of gameplay, map areas, vehicles and other features.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, also took legal steps seeking information that could help identify the people behind the leaks. Now that Rockstar has released official footage, fans have something reliable to compare against those leaked videos.
That’s especially useful because social media has also been flooded with AI-generated fake GTA 6 leaks. So if you see a random GTA 6 clip online, don’t automatically assume it is genuine. Official Rockstar footage is currently the safest reference point.
When Is GTA 6 Coming Out?
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date for GTA 6. The confirmed launch platforms are:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
A PC release date has not been announced by Rockstar. That means PC players currently don’t have a confirmed GTA 6 launch date.
What We Still Don’t Know About GTA 6
Even after a 26-minute official gameplay reveal, Rockstar is keeping plenty of information secret. Here are some of the biggest unanswered questions:
GTA 6 File Size
Rockstar has not officially announced exactly how many GB the game will require. Fan estimates online range widely, but they should not be treated as official information.
PC Release
There is still no official PC release date.
GTA 6 Online
Rockstar has not provided a complete explanation of its next-generation online mode.
Exact Map Size
We know Leonida is large and diverse, but Rockstar hasn’t given us an official map measurement.
Performance Modes
We still don’t have a complete official breakdown of resolution and FPS modes for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Full List of Activities
Rockstar has shown several activities, but the complete list of side content remains unknown.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5: What’s Changed?
The Extended Look makes the generational jump easier to understand. GTA 5 was already an enormous open-world game when it launched in 2013. GTA 6 is being designed specifically for modern hardware. The biggest improvements appear to be in:
- Characters: More detailed faces, hair, skin and animations.
- World: More detailed interiors, streets, beaches and buildings.
- NPCs: Larger crowds and more complex-looking activity.
- Lighting: More advanced reflections and global illumination.
- Environment: More detailed weather, water, vegetation and urban areas.
- Simulation: More vehicles, characters and environmental interactions happening around the player.
In short, GTA 6 isn’t simply GTA 5 with better textures. Rockstar appears to be rebuilding the experience around much more powerful hardware.
So, Is GTA 6 Really as Impressive as Everyone Says?

Based on the official footage, there’s a good reason the response has been so strong. The Extended Look shows an enormous amount of detail without abandoning the classic GTA formula.
You still have cars, crime, guns, police, money, nightlife and ridiculous situations. But they’re taking place inside a much more detailed and densely populated world.
The biggest question now isn’t whether GTA 6 looks impressive. It clearly does. The bigger question is how much of what we’ve seen will translate into the full playable experience.
A carefully edited presentation can show the best parts of a game. The real test will come when millions of players can freely explore Leonida and start breaking all the rules Rockstar has created.
Final Verdict
The GTA 6 Extended Look has finally answered many of the questions fans have been asking for years. We now have a much clearer picture of Jason and Lucia, the world of Leonida, Vice City, the game’s activities, graphics and overall gameplay style.
The game looks bigger, denser and dramatically more detailed than GTA 5. At the same time, several important details remain unconfirmed, including the exact file size, PC release date, GTA Online features, final performance modes and the precise size of the map.
For now, the biggest confirmed fact is simple: GTA 6 is officially coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. And after the Extended Look, the wait has become a lot more difficult.
