Will GTA 6 Have Online? Multiplayer, Crossplay and GTA Online

GTA 6 will not have an online mode at launch. Rockstar Games describes Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience when it releases on November 19, 2026, and it has not announced a GTA 6 Online mode or a date for one. Because there is no multiplayer at launch, there is also no crossplay between PS5 and Xbox.

That does not mean GTA 6 will never go online. Rockstar has added an online mode after launch for its last two big games, and reports point to 2027. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what happens to the current GTA Online.

Not on day one. When Rockstar revealed the editions and opened pre-orders in June 2026, it presented GTA 6 as a single-player game, and the store listings and Rockstar's own FAQ repeat that. Take-Two has said the same to its shareholders.

A separate online mode is still widely expected, because online play has become a huge part of Rockstar's business. But as of October 28, 2026, Rockstar has not officially named it, dated it, priced it or shown it.

There is no official date. Two reports point the same way:

• Bloomberg has reported that Rockstar plans the online component for 2027.
• Twitch CEO Dan Clancy suggested in September 2026 that GTA 6 multiplayer could arrive in 2027.

Other leaks claim online could follow within weeks of launch, or arrive alongside a PC version. None of these come from Rockstar, so treat them as rumors until the studio announces something.

Rockstar's last two open-world games both shipped the story first and opened online play afterwards:

The difference this time is that Rockstar has not announced any online mode in advance. With GTA V, Rockstar showed GTA Online in August 2013 and gave it a date before the game was even out. That silence is why most reporting now expects a longer gap.

Rockstar has not given a reason, but the history gives some clues:

• Online launches are risky: GTA Online's first weeks in 2013 were full of server problems and lost progress. Separating the two launches lets Rockstar focus on one at a time.
• The story comes first: GTA 6 has already been delayed twice to polish the single-player game, as our GTA 6 delay history explains.
• GTA Online is still earning: the current GTA Online keeps a large, paying player base, so there is no rush to replace it.

No crossplay has been announced for GTA 6. At launch the question does not really apply, because there is no multiplayer to share between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players. Rockstar has also not said whether a future GTA 6 Online would support it.

Rockstar's track record does not suggest it is likely. In more than a decade, GTA Online has never offered crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Rockstar's support pages say players on different PC storefronts can play together, but PC and console players cannot, and neither can PlayStation and Xbox players.

If you plan to play with friends once online arrives, the safe assumption today is that everyone should buy GTA 6 on the same console family.

Not announced. Rockstar has not said whether a story save from PS5 can move to Xbox, or to a future PC version. In the past, Rockstar offered one-time character transfers for GTA Online when it moved to new consoles, but those had platform limits and were not true cross-progression.

It keeps running. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said he has "every reason to believe" Rockstar will keep supporting the current GTA Online after GTA 6 releases, pointing to its large and engaged community. Take-Two has not said how long that support will last, or how it will hand over to a GTA 6 online mode.

No. Nothing Rockstar or Take-Two has said points to a shutdown at GTA 6's launch, and the publisher has said the opposite. GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC should carry on as normal on November 19.

Nothing about GTA 6's online mode is official, so this is informed expectation rather than fact. A future mode would likely be set in the same state of Leonida, using the GTA 6 map with Vice City at its center, and build on the heists, businesses and vehicles shown in the story. Systems seen in trailers and the Extended Look, such as robberies of stores and banks, are natural fits for co-op play.

Only if multiplayer is the only reason you play GTA. The single-player story is the full game, and it will be available from November 19. If you bought GTA V mainly for GTA Online, you may prefer to wait until Rockstar announces the online mode and confirms how it works, including whether it needs a separate purchase.
